As a mother who has lost a child, I know something about grief. Chances are, you do, too. Grief is a universal experience, a strong, inescapable response to a loss. Grief is pain.
Your loss may not have been a death. Maybe it happened when your business went bankrupt, or when a serious illness or accident drastically altered your expectations for your future. In our culture, there is often little room to process or heal our grief and so it often remains dormant, waiting for our attention. It may hide, but it doesn't go away.
We may feel it in our bodies. A heaviness in the chest that makes us sigh often and leaves us starved for oxygen. A tightness in the throat, as if we’re fighting to keep a deafening sorrow from roaring out of us. A massive knot in the solar plexus, blocking all sense of personal power. A clenching in the belly that revolts against any enjoyment of food. These physical symptoms are important messages that grief may be fighting for attention, crying out for healing.
Unhealed, stuck grief can block the healthy flow of energy in our lives, stealing our life force, numbing our emotions and robbing us of joy.
For several years, I have been working with some simple but powerful tools of shamanism to help people recognize and heal their grief. Based on this work and my soon-to-be-released book, I will be facilitating a weekend retreat on the weekend of May 20, 9:30am, until noon on Sunday, May 21, at the Cuppa Pulp Writers Space in Nyack, NY.
If you have been feeling heavy, listless, tired, unwell, or if you have never been the same since that "something" happened in your life, please consider whether unhealed grief may be weighing you down. If so, I invite you to participate in our special grief retreat in Oct. It is hard work and it may not sound like a fun way to spend a weekend, but I promise you it could change your life in a very beautiful way.
